Shake No Quake
January 30, 1987. Much of southern California was beset by a shaking phenomenon that stimulated scores of tele phone calls to newspapers, universities, and government facilities. The shaken areas included Long Beach, Pasadena, the San Gabriel Valley, Buena Park, San Pedro, Fullerton, and Newport Beach. Caltech's Seismological Laboratory, at Pasadena, insisted that no seismic activity had been detected. The FAA rulled out sonic booms; the Navy said its ships were not engaged in target practice, and the National Weather Service exonerated weather phenomena. No one seems to know what happened.
